Making sure your website has the basics for SEO
Search Engine Optimization can be a very confusing thing and it changes all the time. However there are some set rules that are good to follow when it comes to your actual websites, now there may be alternatives and other ways of doing this, however this seems to work.
The first thing you want to have on your website are title tags, without them your site may not get indexed correctly and it looks sloppy to have a site with a blank title or the default “Untitled page”. Your title should be a few words which describes your page, do not make it too long, and it should relate to what your page is about. Here is a sample:

Your title should go between the <head> and </head> tags of your website, at the top of your page.
Next we get into the META tags which is something you want to take your time and really focus on, this is what search engines will look for when they index your website into their search results. There are two main types of META tags which we are going to cover. One is the Description tag which should be related to what your page is about and you want to use words which can be found in other places on your site. Some people stress about the length of the description which may be true, but there is no specific amount of words you should have, your description should probably be more than just a sentence or two but it should not start looking like a 1 page essay. Stick to about half a paragraph or so and you should be fine. The other META tag is the keyword tag, once again, what you really want to focus on here is the relevancy of the keywords. The amount of keywords you have really depends on how much content you have on your site, but you want to catch some of the main topics that can be found your site. Do not repeat any words in your description or keywords tag. See the samples of our META tags below:

These are the basics you want to focus on for your website, keep it simple and do not repeat as this may penalize you in search engine rankings. You want to use the same rule for the text on your website which is visible to anyone who goes there, keep it short and simple, too much repetition is bad and may even confuse your visitors.
